The pedestrian crossing points provided on Manston Road and Newington Road, Ramsgate - on or near the mini roundabout between St. Lawrence Church (High Street) and the old swimming pool site, Newington Road (Now acquired by Kent Fire & Rescue) are highly inadequate and we call on Kent County Council to improve the pedestrian safety, by calming or better controlling the traffic and providing pedestrians with safer crossing points.
Parents walking their children to and from St Laurence C of E Aided Junior Academy and between this school and Ellington Infants School, Ramsgate are faced with high volumes of peak time traffic, that corresponds with school opening and closing times.
Crossing the roads, especially Manston Road, is highly dangerous as most cars do not stop or giveway before entering Manston Road. Many parents from schools talk of near misses with cars, vans and bicycles when attempting to cross the roads (especially Manston Road – near the mini roundabout).
The risk of pedestrian injury here is increased by a number factors that relate to the road environment and the time of day, including:
? High volume of traffic
? high speed of traffic (at times)
? inadequate crossing facilities
? lack of pedestrian crossing opportunities (gaps in passing
traffic)
? complexity and unpredictability of traffic movements at mini
roundabout.
