Information about Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE)

Every Local Authority (LA) has a statutory duty to establish a permanent body called a Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education (SACRE).

The role and responsibilities of Kent SACRE:

·         To advise the LA on matters concerned with the provision of Religious Education (R.E.) and collective worship in county schools.

·         To convene an occasional body to produce and recommend an agreed syllabus for RE, called an Agreed Syllabus Conference (ASC).

·         The SACRE monitors the effectiveness and appropriateness of the agreed syllabus, which is formally reviewed every five years.

·         An annual report of activities is submitted to the Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency (QCDA) and to the Kent County Council Children, Children’s Young People and Education Cabinet Committee.

Kent SACRE also publishes guidance and support materials, approves a programme of training for teachers and sponsors or supports other projects which it deems to be consistent with its responsibility to promote religious education and spiritual, moral, social and cultural education in schools.

More information for teachers and schools about a range of issues can be found on the KELSI website which can be accessed herewww.kelsi.org.uk

Kent SACRE meets publicly at least three times a year and publishes agendas and minutes.

The Clerk to SACRE can be contacted in writing at Democratic Services, Room 1.99, Sessions House, County Hall, Maidstone, ME14 1XQ, by phone on 03000 414043 or by email at democratic.services@kent.gov.uk
