Decision details

Policy for the use of mirrors on the Highway in Kent - 12/01931

Decision Maker: Cabinet Member for Environment, Highways and Waste

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Purpose:

Agree an updated policy on the use of mirrors on the highway in Kent.

How the decision  relates to BS4K and Corporate Objectives:

As part of Driving economic prosperity in BS4K it refers to delivering the priorities set out in our integrated transport strategy Growth Without Gridlock (GWG). Within GWG road safety is stated as a constant priority for central and local government.

Impact/costs and risks of proposed decision:

Currently KCC do not support the use of mirrors on the Highway despite many other Highway Authorities allowing them. Limited use of mirrors at specific locations may assist in delivering our key objective of reducing road causalities.

Decision:

As Cabinet Member for Environment, Highways & Waste I agree that the limited use of traffic mirrors on the highway be supported and delegate authority to the Director of Highways & Transportation to agree the specific sites where mirrors are appropriate, providing that site meets the DfT criteria, passes an independent safety assessment and has been the subject of consultation with the Police.
