In 2019, Kent County Council declared a climate emergency in recognition of the urgent environmental challenges facing our region. That declaration aligned Kent with national and international efforts to reduce emissions, protect vulnerable communities, and invest in long-term climate resilience.
The recent decision to undeclare the climate emergency and abandon net zero commitments is a dangerous reversal. It dismisses years of strategic planning and signals a retreat from responsibility at a time when climate impacts—flooding, coastal erosion, extreme heat—are already affecting Kent residents.
This rollback is framed as a cost-saving measure, but the long-term costs of inaction will far outweigh any short-term financial relief. Cancelling building modifications and halting the transition to electric vehicles may save money today, but it risks infrastructure failure, public health impacts, and reputational damage tomorrow.
We believe Kent deserves leadership that prioritises care, evidence, and future-proofing. Reinstating the climate emergency declaration is not about political optics. It’s about integrity, accountability, and protecting the communities we call home.
We urge the council to listen to residents, scientists, and local organisations —and to recommit to a climate strategy that reflects the seriousness of the moment.
