We, the undersigned, are proud of our national flags — the Union Jack and St George’s Cross — when they are used as symbols of unity and celebration.
However, the recent display of flags on lamp posts along Canterbury Road, the High Street, Greenhill Roundabout, Sea Street etc was not done with the consent of the community or Kent County Council. These flags are linked to “Operation Raise the Colours”, a campaign organised by far-right extremists, and we believe their presence is being used to push a divisive agenda rather than genuine patriotism.
While many people in this country are frustrated about the issue of illegal immigration, it is important to remember that many immigrants living here are here legally, contribute greatly to our communities, and deserve respect. Displays like these flags do not make that distinction — instead they create hostility and division, when what we need is fairness and unity.
If individuals wish to show pride by displaying flags, they are free to do so on their own homes or property. Public lamp posts and highways infrastructure belong to everyone, and should not be used to promote political or extremist messages that do not represent the whole community.
Requested Action:
We call on Kent County Council to:
Arrange for the removal of the flags on the lamp posts as soon as possible.
Ensure clear enforcement so that public infrastructure such as lamp posts cannot be used for political or extremist displays in future.
