A257 Road Safety Measures

We the undersigned petition the council to introduce road safety measures on the A257: a 50mph speed limit on the Ash bypass; a 40mph speed limit in the hamlet of Shatterling; central double white lines on the Roman Road and enforcement of the speed limits, to improve safety for everyone living, working, walking, cycling, riding and driving on this road. This petition is supported by the A257 Traffic Group and the residents of the parishes the Group represents.

Too many people have been killed or seriously injured on this stretch of road between the Sandwich roundabout and Gobery Hill, Wingham.
According to Crashmap UK, from 2019-2024 there have been 2 fatal, 10 serious, and 18 slight traffic incidents recorded and we know of at least one more fatality and numerous other incidents since, an unacceptably high level which should be subject to Kent County Council’s “Vision Zero” strategy aimed at reducing fatalities and life-changing injuries on Kent’s roads to zero by 2050.
Drivers go too fast or carry out dangerous overtaking manoeuvres daily with sometimes devastating consequences and pedestrians have been knocked off their feet as vehicles pass too close through Shatterling causing a suction effect.

PC 11454 Bowler has supplied the following quote: “As the local Beat Officer for Wingham and Ash, I would support any speed reduction or safety measure on the A257 which may reduce the potential of future collisions. Any decision would of course be handled by KCC, but I am happy to be contacted by them in relation to this and assist with any future decision process."

We urge KCC to act.
