Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease. There is no cure and
the only available treatment is a strict, lifelong gluten-free
diet. A wide range of gluten-free products is available on
prescription and easy access to these is vital to promote
compliance with the diet to avoid potential health risks amongst
people with the condition. The PCTs in Kent have recently placed
unnecessary restrictions on these products which is detrimental to
the care of people with coeliac disease.
We call for this position to be reversed and returned to the
previous policy in accordance with the national guidelines on
gluten-free prescribing. We ask for the Health Overview and
Scrutiny Committee to assist with this.
On reaching 10000 signatures a full council debate will be held. If the petition achieves between 2500 and 9999 signatures it will be referred to the appropriate Cabinet Committee.
