The purpose of the Scrutiny Committee is:
· To review or scrutinise decisions made, or other actions taken by the Cabinet, Leader or Cabinet Members.
· To make reports or recommendations to the County Council or the Executive, requiring an Executive response within 2 months.
· To make reports or recommendations to the County or the Executive on matters which affect the authority’s area or residents.
Scrutiny is an essential part of ensuring that local government remains transparent, accountable and open, resulting in improved public services, policies and outcomes.
The Committee has the power to require the Leader, Cabinet Members and Senior Managers to attend before it and answer questions. It can also invite other persons to attend, answer questions or provide evidence.
The Committee also meets once a year as the Crime and Disorder Committee (which scrutinises authorities responsible for crime and disorder strategies).
